Paramount Home Inspection's Comedy of Errors or House of Horrors Pt. 1

I’m starting a new series that will hopefully be entertaining, but by the same token inform future home buyers what inspectors see quite often on inspections and why it’s always a good idea to hire a qualified inspector. Whether you’re starting from the ground up with something new or buying a home that has some character, you’ll find some cases of pretty off the wall (pun intended) conditions.

So without further adieu…Wall of Shame Part 1

This was a bit of a surprise for me. I was doing a final walk inspection on a brand new spec home for a client and I don’t think that suspended outlet box from the ceiling conforms to the prevailing NEC (National Electric Code). Now granted, re-wiring the garage door motor with a longer cord would likely void the unit’s warranty; but wouldn’t an extension cord rated for the application been a better and easier solution?? If there was any faulty wiring in the box or opener & you go touch the metal outlet box to plug or unplug; guess what becomes ground? It might become quite the hair raising experience; and from a ladder no less!
